We were introduced to use of Tahini with acai berries by a madison cafe called Fit Fresh Cuisine. (We have done a blog post about their delicious and healthy food here). We make a similar berries banana tahini bowl sometimes for a weekday power breakfast using strawberries and blueberries.
This was the week of Indian festival Sankranti and our blog feeds as well as facebook feeds are filled with traditional sesame inspired recipes. Hence we decided to post about our recipe for berries banana tahini bowl. The recipe combines sweetness and acidity from the berries with nutty creaminess of sesame seed paste which is called tahini. It is now a days available in most grocery stores and is found close to peanut and other nut butters. This pairing is great because tahini is not only delicious but also packed with nutrition. This is also a great option for a weekday breakfast because it can be made fresh within minutes. Its always best to have it fresh and right away after its made as the taste and texture goes down a bit if left around.
We combine the greek or plain unsweetened yogurt with strawberries, blueberries, banana, tahini, milk and protein powder which is optional. We then puree these ingredients till smooth in our blender. We add a serving of unflavored no sugar or sweetener whey protein powder but this is optional. We prefer not to add any sugar because the sugars from the fruit and dairy make it sweet enough for our tastes. However you may adjust this after tasting.
We then pour it in the serving bowl. We top our berries banana tahini bowl with a splash of tahini as well as a sprinkling of chia seeds and something crispy in texture. This can be granola cereal, a crumbled granola bar or some lightly caramelized almond slivers. Multi-grain cereal or cornflakes cereal straight out of the box can work as well. For fun i sometimes sprinkle just a tiny bit of coco powder. A tiny bit of shavings of dark chocolate works great as well. If we have any banana left we also add thin slices of banana on top of our bowl. It is best had fresh as soon as its made.
