Abarrotes Yuremi is not well known so far but rightfully the word is spreading quickly. Was always in search of some elegant Mexican flavors and we found these with Abarrotes Yuremi.
The shop is run by the Gonzalez family and also has a small grocery store. The place itself is small and minimalistic. There is decent amount of seating but the place is no frills. Its always kept tidy and clean and each and every person, the hosts, the cashiers and the chefs are communicative, attentive and helpful.
The elgant part of their cuisine comes in the food. Lot of places serve a glop of rice and beans with grease and cheese. The rice and beans here have cleaner flavors, are not greasy and more and more we count on them as comfort food sides. They feel lighter in you after a meal as well.
The star here are absolutely the tacos. There are so many good things about them. There are two small tortillas both made from corn. Both go on a grill to be warmed up and soft. The meat is moist juicy and grilled perfectly – in our case was chicken. We have also tried the vegeterian which come with zucchini and avocado.
The tacos are topped with onions and cilantro. A wedge of real lime to squeeze on your tacos just before biting a mouthful. The flavors are warm and clean with crunch from the onions and the fresh exciting flavors on the palate from the cilantro and lime.
The 3 tacos and side of rice and beans comes as a meal and is served fairly quickly. We recommend to have this the first time you go there and to eat it warm there. This makes a huge difference and carry out is great too but you should experience it first hot off the plate.
They also sell tubs of salsa roja and salsa verde. You get them in squeeze bottles when you eat at Abbarotes Yuremi. We never leave without taking a tub home since the salsas are fresh and do not taste of citric acid. They have balanced flavors, are a little on the hot side but they should be like that. They are smoky hot and balanced with tartness instead of being burning hot though, the heat is warming and comes a bit later allowing you to taste a lot of nuances of the chili used.
The burritos are different from you fast food chains. The beans and rice taste like they belong here in the burrito. The tortilla is warm and wlastic and this is a filling meal on its own.
I had not liked the tamales i have had so far. Granted they were many times from frozen aisles but even at some restaurants these were quite heavy masses of flour. Here they are light and airy with creamy mouthfeel and you can taste the delicate flavors of corn flour.
We have also tried the tostadas as well as sopes. The tortas are good too and are huge! One of the things to not miss if you have a sweet tooth is their flan. For party orders you can get a round tray as well! The flan is a perfect creamy but thick and rich texture, while the caramel is rich and syrupy.
There are always specials which are written on the board or advertised on the counter and english menu is available on the cards on the counter. The people are very friendly and will help with recommendations and customization.
